What you must know
Environment North of Zengwun Creek, Sigang is looking to Anding Township from the cross side of the Creek. On the Jiianan Plain, Sigang has flat lands and mild weather highly suitable for agriculture. Bordering Madou at east, Jiali at north, Anping District of Tainan City at south, and Cigu at west, Sigang is a small township with one high school, one junior high school and six elementary schools. Located at the pivot point between Tainan City and Beimen Township with Tai 19 Expressway crossing through the town, Sigang links to Anding and Tainan through Sigang Bridge at south and Jiali/Sueijia at north. Tai 173 Provincial Expressway, the major access of the town, links Madou at north and Cigu at west.
History Located southwest of Tainan County at the north shore of Zengwun Creek, Sigang was an inland port of the Taijiang Inland Lake. The History of Jhuluo County, Sigang was already noted as a ferry point for goods and passengers in the recordings made in 1717 (Kangxi 56 Qing Dynasty, note: this township was part of the municipality of Anding Community). As Taijiang Inland Lake disappeared over the years, Sigang gradually lost its function as a trade center. Development of Sigang was marked by the construction of today’s Cingan Temple at Cingan Village, which was built in the Zheng Cheng-Gong Era of Ming Dynasty. This indicates that development of this area began as early as the 17th century. The name of Sigang (west port) might have come from the fact that it was west of the Tackalan Port (today’s Anding). Another story says that this place was a seashore land west of the backup camps of Zheng Cheng-Gong, so it was called Sigang (west port). The place was officially name as Sigang in 1920 and zoned as Sigang Township Tainan County in 1948.
