The Cultural Imagination and Fulfilling of Nan-ying

Walking through the 31 townships of Nan-ying, it is here that you will discover the original villages of Tainan. Everywhere you can see relics, ceramic pieces, brick-tiles, stone implements and fossils that tell the long, rich and pluralistic history of this land. The temple cultures, folk-formation legacies, literatures and books of Singang along with the culture of Siraya Pingpu tribe record the beauty of the humanity in the Nanying great land. The golden-yellow spikes of rice in the villages and small towns, the red and white lotus farms, the rich creaming milk smell, the artificial wetlands and the green light gallery deliver a heart-touching story of community development. These are the touching and proud cultural images of Nanying. My cultural envision of Nanying is founded on this base, built together with companions sharing similar cultural interest.

In order to provide Tainan County residents with more convenient cultural activities in the vast lands but limited cultural facilities, currently the Sinying area has already established a municipal cultural center. The Sinfeong area has established a Service Center in Southern Area. The Zengwun Area displays relics as the theme for their Tsung-yeh Arts & Cultural Center. The Beimen Area transformed the abandoned Jiali Sugar Factory into what’s now the Shaolong Cultural Park in the spirit of salvaging unoccupied space. As of current, there are already several diverse types of arts & cultural centers presented including four large administrative districts. The disparity of the cultural facilities among the districts has also been improved; except for the Sinhua area which is located in the mountainous areas of Nan-ying which as of yet has not established an arts & cultural center of any scale. Due to this fact, County Mayor Su also directed plans for a 3-in-1-service center for travel, industry and arts; believing the outcome of this goal can be seen in the near future. Moreover, there are cultural museums portraying local aspects of each area; such as the Youngkuwe Literature Museum, the Linkungang Memorial Hall, the Yanshuilong Memorial Hall, the Yanfen Zone Literature Museum, the Cailiao Fossil Museum and the Crossing-toes Ceramic Cultural Museum which have all been established successively; thus, the cultural domain of Nanying is even broader hence reforming the new culture of Nanying.

Cultural endeavors is something that if you don't do today then you will regret it tomorrow; especially in regards to collecting historical materials of humanity, for once it is lost, it's close to be impossible to research or recover. The Cultural Affairs Bureau had started a series called “The Nan-ying Culture” they planed 10 years ago and so far they have finished 50 pamphlets in this series. In the beginning of 2005, with support from County Mayor Su, they combine the humanity history of Nan-ying collected and recorded by the academic realm along with the local culture and history personnel then finished them in record time (10 pamphlets a year.) At the same time, they supplemented visual records and old generations' oral descriptions to make the establishment of human history information more complete. They also held numerous academic research meetings, such as, the academic composition meeting of the Siraya Pingpu Tribe, the developing history of Tainan County along with the academic research meeting of the reversed wind at the inner sea, the international academic research meeting of Nan-ying Study and also conducted the human history meeting of having the college students to return to their hometowns to look for their origins, which cultivates the young generations' understanding and emphasis to their hometown. In the future, they will construct “Nan-ying Study” furthermore with this basis.
